Diary of a Resurrectionist, 24 December 1811

Tuesday 24th.
At twelve at midnight a party went to Wygate got 3 small, came back and got 2 large at Newington, Came home then settled at Ben’n , Each man’s share 1l. 6s. 8d., at home all night.

On Christmas Eve, went out and resurrected 3 smalls (children) at Wygate and 2 large (adults) at Newington. Then settled up at Ben Crouch’s house; £1 6s and 8d.

Wygate is one of the burial grounds which remains unidentifiable. Isabella Holmes noted that she couldn’t identify it at all, and James Blake Bailey doesn’t comment on it. Like Big Gates, it is likely that it will never be identified.

Newington was identified by Isabella Holmes as probably referring to St Mary’s parish churchyard, but Naples does not give any additional information about exactly which ground he means. James Blake Bailey makes no comment on it’s identity.

About theresurrectionists

My name is Kirsty Chilton. I am a Medical Historian working in London and relentlessly searching for the body snatchers of 18th and 19th century London. Currently, the content of this blog is a personal project to repost and comment on the diary of 19th century Resurrectionist Joseph Naples 200 years from the time it was written.
